RE: WELCOME NEW MEMBERS THREAD

Hi all.

I'm Mike, I'm 27, and I've lived in the Kansas City area my entire life. Growing up in KC I've obviously seen my fair share of bad weather. I've never seen a tornado, that I remember anyways, and where I live, we haven't really had any close calls. I've always been interested in weather, but hadn't really started to read up on it until lately.

As you can probably guess, I heard/saw about this website on "Storm Chasers" and here I am.

RE: Photo exhibition

Hi Susan.

It went really well and there was so much appreciation and favorable comments to me. Everyone enjoyed the night and a lot of questions were asked. Had a meteorologist from our severe weather section there also and had a good chat to him about storms and things, he was pretty impressed with it all. A lot of actual photographers were there unbeknown to me and we chatted at length about the images - makes a big difference from shooting landscapes they told me!

You meet a lot of people from all walks of life and one person there was a survivor from a lightning strike - that blew me away totally! She recalled in detail her experience and was fascinating to listen to her account.

Very humbling experience and will def do it again - this time with a book release.

You can go to this link to see some happy snaps of the night. That's the Shadow Minister for the Arts opening the exhibit - a nice guy for a politician!

RE: Supercells in Australia herald storm season

MAJOR STORM EVENT!

South East Queensland has had 5 days running with severe thunderstorms/ supercells and there's no respite to it yet.

Moisture feeding in from across the western side of Australia, partly from Cyclone Anika and a broad area of low pressure is being carried across to the eastern states with the aid of a vigorous jet stream. In combination with that is a cold low pressure area in the southern parts of the Australian continent which is converging with the warmer tropical air feeding in from the other side also - only means one thing - all that energy has to go upward!

Last Sunday is being tagged as 'Supercell Sunday' for that region given the extend of damage. They have estimated at least half a billion dollars damage - that is incredible! Winds peaked at 130km/h, golf ball sized hail was reported to have been coming horizontal with the wind gusts! I heard of a report of hail being 7 inches in size, someone has it in their freezer - I'd like to see a photo of that before confirming it!

The part of Australia is familiar with severe weather, but to continue each day for 5 days and probably for the next few days is something not seen in a very, very long time. Almost a one in 80- year event.

The video was taken as one of the supercells unleashed its winds and hail on one resident - you can see trampolines, BBQ's and chairs being flung around and the wind is something akin to hurricane force.

This video is from an area called 'The Gap' in Brisbane which bore the brunt of the supercell where over 80 homes were damaged beyond repair. It's incredible stuff and check out the rain squall with hail and the end which gets bigger!

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=kwbUPNVHrOI

After the storm damage in the same area!

I hope you all enjoy our little bit of severe weather at the moment!!

RE: Tips on spotting Nocturnal tornadoes???

...listen for a roar or a sound like a large waterfall...
... And if you are hearing that, it is probably too late! :o  :o
Key to chasing at night (and during the day for that matter) never let yourself become debris.

Radar is not some magical thing that can save you. May 5 '07 I was sitting north of St John, KS waiting for the storm( and area of rotation) to pass to my north. While waiting there I notice the TIV pass me and heading south. Within a few minutes I began to hear a very distinct sound. It took me about 2 seconds to figure out what was going on and I was back on the road speeding away as fast as I could. I made a major mistake, the rotation did not go to my north, but to my south and I blame this mistake on trusting our occasional radar images. If you watched the first season of "Storm Chasers", you would know that TIV was hit by a tornado that night only moments after they drove by me. Unless the storm has very good lightning and you really know where you are all times it is just not worth it.

I dont know if there are really on tips for seeing tornadoes after dark. The storm is either going to let you see the tornado or not. Just dont get in the path.

Generally speaking, if there is a tornado warning issued at night and you know you are in the path, forget about spotting and get to a safe spot and stay there until the warning expires. If you know 100% for sure that you're not in the path and you happen to have a good vantage point, checking for power flashes, watching for a tornado during lightning flashes, etc. is really the only option.

RE: Tips on spotting Nocturnal tornadoes???

There is alot of things that can go bad while attempting to see a night time tornado.. #1 don't do it... It's not worth your life to see a tornado at night. Leave spotting night time tornado to the experts... Radar is not a very good tool to use when trying to spot tornadoes at night.. Radar has a 5 minute delay...So the scan you actually see on your computer screen is what the storm looked like 5 minutes ago. Things can change very quickly in less then 5 minutes in a supercell. Radar can be handy though so you can keep a safe distance from the storm.. Keep watch while lightning flashes for tornado like structure, power flashes and listen for a roar or a sound like a large waterfall. It's hard to see night tornadoes and I wouldn't reccomend it.
